Maintaining your practice gear
Proper care extends the life of your mat and net and keeps them looking and performing their best.
Clean your mat regularly
Artificial turf mats collect dirt, grass clippings and ball marks. Clean them with a soft‑bristled brush, mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before use. Vacuuming removes loose debris and fluff; avoid using harsh chemicals, which can damage the turf.
Store mats and nets properly
Keep your gear in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and degradation. Store mats flat or rolled up – never fold them. Nets should be dried after rain and brought indoors during the off‑season.
Prevent mats from sliding
If your mat slips on smooth surfaces, secure it with double‑sided carpet tape, non‑slip rubber, Velcro strips or mount it onto a plywood base. You can also apply non‑slip coating or rubber grip pads on the underside of the mat. A stable mat protects you from injury and improves ball contact.
Rotate and replace as needed
Rotate your mat so one spot doesn’t wear out prematurely. Replace the mat when the turf blades are matted down or torn – artificial turf mats last 3‑5 years, while heavy‑duty rubber mats can last 5‑7 years. Nets also need inspection; repair small holes promptly and replace the net if it loses elasticity or tears easily.
Good maintenance ensures your backyard practice area stays safe and enjoyable for many seasons.
