Home Golf Simulator Build Guide

Creating an indoor golf simulator

A home simulator brings the course to you and helps you practice year-round. Basic setups require five components:

  1. Hitting mat – Choose a sturdy mat with shock-absorbing backing and realistic turf. A 4′×5′ or 5′×5′ mat works for most rooms; hitting strips are ideal for sim enclosures.
  2. Net or impact screen – A net catches balls, while an impact screen also displays projector images. Make sure it’s durable and sized for your space.
  3. Launch monitor – This device tracks club speed, ball speed and launch angle. Options range from affordable radar units to high-end optical systems.
  4. Projector/monitor – A short-throw projector projects the course onto your screen. Lower-cost setups can use a TV or monitor.
  5. Computer/tablet – Runs simulation software and connects to your launch monitor. Ensure it meets the software’s requirements.

Space requirements

For a comfortable swing, you need at least 10 ft (3 m) of ceiling height, 12 ft (3.7 m) of width and 15 ft (4.6 m) of depth. Measure your space carefully and choose a simulator enclosure that fits. You can build a simple enclosure using curtain rods and blackout curtains or buy a pre-made sim cage.

Budget considerations

Home simulators range from USD $2,000–$20,000+ depending on the technology and accessories. Budget setups combine affordable mats, nets and entry-level launch monitors; premium builds use high-resolution impact screens, top-tier launch monitors, powerful gaming PCs and high-lumens projectors. Don’t overspend on extras until you understand your needs.

Planning your build

  • Start simple: You can upgrade components later. Focus first on a good mat and accurate launch monitor.
  • Check software compatibility: Make sure your launch monitor and simulation software work together and meet your computer’s specs.
  • Safety: Secure the screen or net and add padding behind it to absorb ball impact. Keep cables tidy to avoid tripping hazards.

By planning carefully, you can build a simulator that fits your budget and space. It’s a major upgrade for your home practice and adds entertainment value for family and friends.
